Ação Jovens Indígenas

Ação Jovens Indígenas works together with the Support Group for Young Indigenous Peoples of Mato Grosso do Sul (GAPK). Collectively, these initiatives aim to empower the indigenous youth and children of the Dourados Indigenous Reserve-RID, with regard to human and indigenous rights so that they are subjects of their stories, all through non-formal education.

AJI/GAPK's major emphasis has been on training indigenous youth. The vast majority of individuals who participated in the project entered public contests within the Dourados Indigenous Reserve, and some partake in indigenous movements where they play a fundamental role in communication. AJI/GAPK has great prestige inside and outside the Dourados Indigenous Reserve since it has national and international contact with NGOs and indigenous movements all over the world.

Previous Projects:

1

Upon creation, Ação Jovens Indígenas and Support Group for Young Indigenous People of Mato Grosso do Sul became the first non-governmental organisations created by, and aiming to supply for,  the indigenous youth in the Dourados Reserve area.

2

AJI continuously holds workshops for the indigenous youth. Within these sessions, open dialogue is carried out and the children choose topics that are of importance to them. Recently, issues such as violence among young people, drugs, and suicide have been discussed.

3

AJI has obtained financial aid from Grupo de Apoio aos Indígenas do Mato Grosso do Sul. It also has intellectual and professional support of the University of São Paulo's Faculty of Medicine, FMUSP. Further, AJI has received financial support from Dourados and Itaporã Forums, botth of which recognise its work as vital for the community.

4

In addition, AJI receives support in terms of publication and dissemination of its work from the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs - IWGIA.

AJI is currently working on expanding its resources so that the activities offered can be further developed. These include: video, photography, drawing, human and indigenous rights, computing, capoeira and soccer lessons.
